  1. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) is subject to the Privacy Act 1998 which requires that we comply with the Information Privacy Principles (IPP) set out in the Act. The IPPs set out how Australian Government agencies should collect, use, store and disclose personal information and how individuals can access records containing their personal information;
  2. DIAC manages the website and treats personal information as confidential;
  3. Information received by DIAC is protected from unauthorised use and disclosure by virtue of the specific provisions in the Migration Act 1958, Crime Act 1914, Public Service Act 1999 and the Public Service Regulations 1999; and
  4. A breach of these laws may make an officer liable to criminal and/or civil penalty.

Use and disclosure of personal information

The use and disclosure of the personal information on this website is subject to the Privacy Act 1998 and can only be used or disclosed in accordance with the IPPs.

The Privacy Act 1998 and the IPPs do not apply to the use and disclosure of the personal information on this website by foreign governments.
